We are PEPFAR Kenya

Twenty years ago, President George W. Bush announced the creation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief - known worldwide as PEPFAR - to respond to a global health emergency. At the time, millions of people were living with HIV/AIDS with little or no access to treatment. Hospitals were overwhelmed, families and communities were decimated, and hope was fading. Only 50,000 people in Africa were on treatment.

That historic announcement led to the start of the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history, and has transformed the global AIDS response, laying a marker for America’s commitment to countries that were impacted the hardest by the AIDS epidemic. Since then, the people of the United States have provided more than $100 billion to save more than 25 million lives and dramatically improved health outcomes in more than 55 partner countries, including Kenya - where PEPFAR provides daily life-saving antiretroviral drugs to more than 1.3 million people living with HIV (PLHIV).

Through PEPFAR's partnership in Kenya, we have saved millions of lives, strengthened health systems and economic prosperity, and created hope. With over a million Kenyans on daily lifesaving HIV treatment, and 94% of them having successfully suppressed the virus, we can confidently say Kenya is on the cusp of epidemic control. However, our mission is not yet finished. Let's continue working together to do what previously seemed impossible: eradicating HIV/AIDS as a public health threat in Kenya by 2027. We can do it - together.
